The BIG ADVENTURE

As part of my Jubilee celebrations towards the big Five Oh I decided on a solo trip of a lifetime, exploring Botswana, then on to see the Victoria Falls, heading south through Namibia, back to South Africa. The budget was less than shoestring and inexpensive Baked Beans appeared on my menu.

The older posts are about my preparations and the newer ones are from my adventure to date.

Sweet dreams

For those of you who have not yet met me, I am not a small girl!  As a friend from the Eastern Cape once humourously described it "heavy-hipped honky".  (In SA we generally don't consider the use of the word 'honky' to be a racial slur like it is in some other countries)

I don't enjoy sleeping bags as they don't give me enough room to move in.  I feel mummified, wrapped in a tight cocoon of puff and polyester.  I always end up opening the zip and simply using the sleeping bag as a blanket or comforter.  Of course the cold night air always manages to sneak up on me and I end up lying awake, ice-cold!  Somewhere along the way of numerous house moves, my sleeping bag disappeared.  Subsequently any trips away requiring me to bring my own sleeping stuff has me dragging along a big double bed comforter which was not very warm or snug.  I'm certainly not going to manage with it on the cold misty often windy areas of Namibia in winter.  A new sleeping bag is required.

So it's off to the camping shops, sports shops, discounters and anyone else who sells sleeping bags.  Holy smoke!!!!  I was bombarded with options - did I want goose-down with a cowl top, bag tapering down to the feet (eeeek - mummy again!) and would keep an eskimo warm in a blizzard, or did I want I want an 'entry level' rectangular bag for summer camping, or did I want something in between.

I looked at all of them - some were really cuddly and snug and exorbitantly expensive but I didn't think I needed something that would be useful in a sub-zero ice blizzard.  I also didn't think I need something too thin and I'd end up being cold all night.  More important I needed something that I'd be able to turn around in and not sweat like I was in one of those sweat-tubs where all that sticks out is your head.  There is an option to zip two bags together, but that also means paying 2x the price.

Eventually I found an affordable double-sized sleeping bag at Outdoor Warehouse and it meets all my requirements - big enough for me to get lost in and warm enough for cold windy nights.

I think I'm going to be snug-as-a-bug-in-a-rug!!
