The BIG ADVENTURE

As part of my Jubilee celebrations towards the big Five Oh I decided on a solo trip of a lifetime, exploring Botswana, then on to see the Victoria Falls, heading south through Namibia, back to South Africa. The budget was less than shoestring and inexpensive Baked Beans appeared on my menu.

The older posts are about my preparations and the newer ones are from my adventure to date.

Tense Tents Dilemma

OK, so I'd set my heart on an OzTent RV2 after scouting around the camping and 4x4 stores.  I sent a letter to the agents in SA, with a link to my post on their tent, and they kindly offered to sell me one at dealer price (which is still expensive).

OzTents just aren't on offer secondhand - clearly everyone is satisfied with their purchases.  Slowly I've accepted The Tent, my shelter, my protection, is going to be an a bigger outlay than I budgeted for.

A long-lost schoolfriend I've reconnected with through Facebook is also into The Bush, wildlife, etc. and has been following my blog.  She recommended another tent called a Turbo Tent which is also easily erected by one person.  I carted myself back off to the camping stores to investigate.  They are available at Outdoor Warehouse outlets - a big camping retail store.  I wonder why no ODW salesman tried to sell me one before????  I'm impressed with the Turbo Tent which is slightly cheaper than the Oztent dealer price.

I've spent a lot of this weekend weighing up the pros and cons of the two (yes I was comparing apples with apples).  I won't bore you with all the specs, but I will say my decision will be made by the stretcher my friend Kobus is loaning me.  If it is 1.9m or longer, then I'll be buying the Turbo Tent, if it is shorter, I'll be buying the OzTent.

For those of you wondering why I'm not buying a RoofTop Tent, I did look at them and thought it's quite a long way to fall out of bed in the morning.

Rooftop Tent

Seriously though, I've read too many times where people set up their RTT  in camp and then couldn't rush off to see any exciting animal sightings as it's too much time and effort to take it down, pack it away and only then be able to drive out. I can't have that happen, can I? No.

Will let you know what the stretcher decided . . .

We used the Turbo in Kruger for the 5 day safari thing and they are great... easy to put up, WATERPROOF even in wind and you can stand up in them - they are also big enough for 2 stretchers.....???

which ever one you pick your adventure is going to be epic.

EPIC. :)

(is it possible to rent one?)

Renting is the first thing that popped into my mind, Lori beat me to it! ;)

I like the Turbo, and despite the rooftop having its plusses: distance from snakes, buuuugs (can you tell I haven't been to Africa in a while?) and general ground level wildlife, you want to be ready when it's time to rush off.

Another thing I have to agree with Lori on is the EPIC part.

I envy you...

A long rental is nearly the same as me buying, so I'll be buying and then I'll own it for my other adventures - which I intend to do more regularly. . .

:o)
